5 Easy Ways to Keep Your Feet Healthy and Safe at the Gym

Posted by Apex Foot Health on 4th Aug 2022

Around 45 million adults in the U.S. have a gym membership. Everyone wants to stay fit and healthy! If you've just gotten your new gym membership, you're probably excited to start your new workout routine.

Not so fast. Have you taken your foot health into consideration? Foot injuries are common amongst new exercisers, so how can you avoid them?

Let's talk about it. Read on to learn all about how to keep your feet healthy while you work out.

1. Wear the Right Shoes for the Occasion

When you think of gym shoes, you likely have a specific style of shoe in mind, right? In reality, there is no one-size-fits-all shoe option for fitness.

People who are running will need different shoes than people who are lifting weights. Some exercises are better done without shoes (such as yoga or pilates).

If you're taking a class, ask the instructor about the style of shoe they recommend. If you're at the gym alone, don't be afraid to observe other people who are doing the same exercises.

Regardless of the style of shoe, you also have to make sure that it's supportive enough. Make sure that you have appropriate arch and sole support before you start exercising, even if you're in a "flatter" shoe.

2. Make Sure to Stretch and Rest

Recovery is just as important as exercise, especially when it comes to foot care. Make sure that you stretch after your workouts to prevent unnecessary pain or stiffness.

Even if you have some hefty health and fitness goals, make sure that you don't skip your important recovery periods. Overtraining can lead to serious injuries, including foot pain.

3. Use Proper Form

When you exercise, make sure that you're doing it correctly. Squatting, lunging, leg-pressing, and even running can lead to foot injuries if you do it incorrectly.

Look at tutorials or work with a trainer when you start doing a new exercise. You also may need to make adjustments for your body's specific needs.

4. Consider Special Socks and Insoles

So what if you're still experiencing foot pain after taking all of these steps? If this is the case, it might be time to upgrade your socks and add an insole (especially if you've chosen non-orthotic shoes).

Insoles especially can make a huge difference. They'll add extra sole and arch support and protect your feet from the shock associated with running and jumping.

5. Keep Your Feet Clean

Foot care isn't all about pain. You also have to consider cleanliness. If you struggle with foot odor or athlete's foot after a day at the gym, it's time to make some changes.

Make sure that you bring a pair of shower shoes with you if you plan on showering at the gym. This will help you avoid some of the bacteria that are lurking on the gym floors and in the shower itself.

When you're done with your workout, remove your shoes and socks as soon as you get home. If you don't have time to shower, wipe off your feet with an antibacterial wipe or soap and water.
